eduroam

eduroam offers a unique wireless user experience worldwide, with the motto "Get connected - wherever you are." It enables students, researchers, and staff from higher education institutes to access the internet seamlessly on their own campus and when visiting other universities, both in Switzerland and abroad. The convenience extends to numerous public hotspots globally, including airports, restaurants, and event locations.

So, the next time you visit colleagues at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, are invited to Oxford University for a conference, or walk past Københavns Universitet in Denmark, expect eduroam to welcome you! This epitomises mobile connectivity at its best, catering to mobile phones, tablets, and laptops alike.

Secure network access
eduroam is based on the most secure encryption and authentication standards (WPA2/3-Enterprise, EAP-TLS) in existence today. Its security exceeds typical commercial hotspots by far. eduroam provides end-to-end encryption to ensure that your private user credentials are only visible to your home institution. The certificate of your home server is the only point you need to trust.

Flexible options for participation
Institutions and hotspot providers can choose from a variety of ways to participate - whatever suits their personal situation. Set up your own infrastructure, use a managed Identity Provider service, or outsource the Identity Provider to Switch. Plus, you have the option to leverage the Switch edu-ID to issue eduroam credentials.

A worldwide solution
eduroam has no limits – eduroam hotspots can be found in over 100 countries. As eduroam grows, more and more hotspots are appearing in additional places such as libraries, museums, and public spaces like airports, railway stations, and coffee shops. In 2023, 7.5 billion authentications worldwide were made via eduroam. And this number is still rising, showing the need for a ‘proper’ wireless solution even in the days of unlimited data bundles and 5G.

eduroam – everyone wins
